@QMJS articulated it better than i ever could!!!!!

but also i forgot to reply to the "usable swords on both hands at around 8-10 as far as those that could actually be used for self-defense" of your post (damn customers sigh lol)

8-10 swords thats easily enough to arm your edged weapon specialists right? you are using that as an example why there should be no swords cause they dont exist etc yet you know of 8-10 in your area alone (which is 6-8 more swords than i found through entire story mode)
but also heres the thing, you dont know me right? and i dont live anywhere near you right? (not even same country) but i own more than that myself. Is it not fair to say there could well be someone like me (or 2 or 3 or 4.....................100?) in your town that you dont know that has a bunch of blades?

also, why they should be there and why "to make edged weapons on par with blunt etc etc" is simply the sword in all its forms was and still is the best all purpose melee weapon ever invented period, the sword is the highest echelon of the melee weapon and being they do exist in there many forms and are still being made today (in high numbers too) and many peoples fascination with them they are more than justified in being in any modern set era "realistic" game.
if there ever is a ZA everything else aside if you wanted the best melee weapon available for this the answer is a sword and a sword alone, the only question would be which type?

Outside of collectors, I only envision training (unsharpened or wooden) swords, makeshift or what we got with collector swords.

But with makeshifts, sword like items from metal working buildings or in hobbyist rooms/garages. Metal with a blade and handle. Recognized as a sword but technically not an actual historical piece. I could see those. Like the orc sword in the blade collectors set but more crude. There are plenty of leaf springs and such around...

Come to think of it... I wonder if the idea if using the machine shop and a material point to make crude melee weapons crossed the devs minds.

While I understand where you're coming from with the fact that most swords found in America aren't battle ready swords (but more for wall decorations), to think that they shouldn't be in the game because they wouldn't be effective/would break quickly doesn't seem fair considering most of the blunt and heavy weapons found in the game would also be ineffective/break quickly in real life. Most wooden based weapons (including weapons like the bat, or tools with a wooden handle like a shovel or hoe) wouldn't last that long when used full force against a human skull. They'd break fairly quick. You might be able to kill a couple--maybe--but you certainly aren't going to be relying on it too long. The game is full of weapons that likely wouldn't realistically be that effective against hordes of undead: canes, pokers, hockey sticks, courtroom gavel, microphone, candlesticks, rolling pins, etc. Should we get rid of them all and only use arguably more realistic weapons like crowbars? That would be pretty boring, IMO.

I don't want goofy weapons like Dead Rising, but part of the lure of surviving in the zombie apocalypse is the idea that survivors are using any tool or object around the house, including bats, shovels, swords, etc. and can use them effectively against the zeds. If SoD tried to be overly realistic about this and other issues, it would quickly lose its appeal and not be that fun.

How about machetes? Modern day utility swords. The ones I've used by Ontario are incredibly strong. I know that I can chop a tree trunk all day with a machete and it won't bend or break. I wouldn't try that with any sword. They should get five star ratings in SOD.

IIRC there are only two max-durability blades in SoD— the cutting machine blade, and the tactical tomahawk.

How many different machetes are in SoD currently? Six? Seven? (including kukris) Spanning from cheap up to the CLEO variant— which I think is Durability: ■■■■□
I'm trying to remember how melee specializations progress— do they reduce wear & tear on their respective weapon type at a certain skill level?

Mmhh I still prefer a good old Katana.
Even got mine, just in case, you know...

One that really cuts, like Michonne, not one that "hits" more than it actually cuts!

I dig the Chinese War Sword— basically a machete meant for two hands:

Where is the functional barrel? Or is it just a fancy handle?

It's magic. Either that, or the barrel opening is hidden in the chamfer at the end. A big aspect of the gunblade in FF8 was to pull the trigger as you slash an opponent with the blade.

I would suggest that the small gap after the barrel, while inside the beginning of the blade is where it is effective. But with that, I would think the only way to make that work is shotgun shells with little or no pellets. Or phosphorus shotgun shells to increase burning.
