Oddly, you have to be very careful these days when portraying military vehicles in games, GM, Raytheon and the other big contractors are carefully protecting their trademarks. We avoided it altogether until we get more clarification.

you sure that by 1897 they don't mean that lovely Winchester 1887 lever action shotgun? cause THAT is a gun I'd like to see.

short of a AA-12 with a 20 drum magazine but yeah, I get it I get it, too powerful (fingers crossed on mods though)

Beyond that, what's with the range limitations on projectile weapons (especially scoped rifles)? I know I'm the FNG here but its actually painful for me sitting up on a vantage point unable to actually snipe anything properly (on that also the zoom distance on sniper rifles). engine limitations? collision detection?

  3. I love this, IRL I'm a firearm fanatic, it's my hobby and a lifestyle where I live and this just really tickles me fancy.

Hey Raz, welcome to you and Wiebelhaus. I am a lifelong enthusiast and giving a wide range of firearms was very important to me. The non existent scope view has been long lamented in these forums and short of digging up links in the hundreds of gun related posts, it was a technical limitation that made us pull away from a traditional scoped view. There will be a new version of the A-12 with a drum mag but not full auto in the first DLC, affectionately named "Bonesaw". The 1897 will be in the first DLC too, the 1887 will be in the second (modeled after my own vintage 1887, minus the Damascus barrel of course)

    Cheers!

any chance of anything in .50 Beowulf ? you know you want to ,oh and remind me when you have time to read some refinements to previous ideas, about ammo production.

Oh you have just made my day, that is AWESOME! personally I'm not too fussed on full auto anyways with the AA12, want to conserve ammo, (though I've one hell of a twitchy trigger finger) usually end up firing assault weapons in single shot... only ever burst fire with SMG's.

I'm strangely okay too with a 'non crosshair/scope' zoom on sniper weapons, I was more referring to hit detection, anything beyond around 40 metres is more or less impossible to hit even when you've topped out shooting skills and specialised in rifles. I've done shooting competitions with a compound bow and hit 'x's (center of target) at upwards of 60+ meters, pushed 80 at one point. that was more my question, if there was some hit detection issue with the game past a certain range and it won't register a hit on a Zed. its not often that it occurs for me as I'm usually in closer ranges, but on the occasion that I'm not and try to thin the ranks? even with one of the 50cal rifles, (kills on center mass shots as well) I find I'm just pissing ammo to the wind, even when firing into a horde.

Although... "affectionately named 'bonesaw'"? is that a hint at the 'hero' class with unique weapons I've heard rumor about?
and if unique weapons do come with these hero classes, are they also restricted to those particular characters? (so you can't share them out to other characters?)

and if THAT's the case (sheesh I'm on a roll here) how is that going to work with weapon repairs/inventory management, like you can only deposit the unique weapon in the community stash to be repaired (if they require repairing at all being 'unique weapons'?) and nobody else can pick it up but the character?

If you don't mind it being lumped into the .50 caliber family of guns, then gimme some ideas

Ranges in our game are so completely unreal because we're pushing the engine a little too hard. Inclusion of full interior spaces and having a lot of zombies active at the same time has reduced our smart AI and draw distances to distances much shorted than you'd expect. Range is determined by the weapon type and then modified by caliber. Zombies too far away are too dumb to know they should be dead so there was never a need to have scoped views and besides, the scoped view would look terrible since you'd be looking past our best texture resolutions. We hope to blast past these issues in the next iteration of the game.

Hero weapons unlock with the hero, then they are yours to do with as you please, not stuck on the "hero" they came with.

well they make the .50 Beowulf uppers for most M4 variants so why not something like that ?you could call it the M6 Foe Hammer.

that's right... basically the same gun with a barrel and receiver overhaul, barely looks much different, though the size of the round does make mags a bit squished for capacity from what I heard, switched out the banana clip (the usual curve we see on M4 rifles nowadays) for straight boxes as the rounds are big, wider, and have thick casings for all the propellant, though they're not quite as long as the usual rounds fired from the M4 carbines, the pointed FMJ 5.56 rounds.

Though there do seem to be some pretty funky magazine designs to get around that... saw what looked like Beowulf rounds in a big one side drum/spiral mag. Beyond that... prominent features of Beowulf .50 firing rifles is some sort of muzzle break, cause those bullets kick ass both ways, down range, and into your shoulder.

the .50 Beowulf round is toted as anti-material from a smaller platform for punching through cars and killing engines at vehicle checkpoints, but that could all be military chest pounding, it has gained use and recognition as a good hunting round though.

I had forgotten about the .458 Socom so good catch ,now if only we could get some extra calibers I've got some fun ones in mind.

  15. It would be great to have a Variant chambered for the .45-70 Gov since its generally more abundant and .50 ammo is usually in short supply in my 4 playthroughs i usually find 2 .50 rounds at a time. I cant say I've found more than 20 or so rounds and nothing that uses them.

    50. Beowulf isn't hardly as big as a 50. BMG round. It merely has the same diameter as the round. Same thing with IMI Desert Eagles. They don't shoot no 50, BMG.

They know that, it's just confusing since I've lumped all the 50's in the same category. I don't know if that was wise or if I should have just not included guns that don't use the calibers we did include? Don't know, I think in the end the variety is better than realism...

    Cheers!

For this purpose I still feel that was the best way to handle it - nonspecific '.45 Caliber', '.50 Caliber', etc. The only caveat is the immense weight of the ammunition when using a .50 caliber handgun. Does it still make my eye twitch when I see an icon for .357 SIG on the Colt Python? Sure. Does it detract from the fun of the game? Not at all. If anything, the condensed calibers encourages you to use the guns you find as you aren't stuck with an M1917 revolver but only finding .45 Colt ammunition!

I'll see if I can't average the weight per round to help reduce the load on non BMG users. Good point Drake
